There are financial requirements you must meet to receive a student visa for Australia. Find out how to show you have the minimum amount of money needed for a student visa.

Living expenses will depend on the lifestyle you choose, but the cost-of-living calculator will help you estimate how much you may need each month.

You can also work while you study in Australia. As an international student in Perth, you can work up to 48 hours every two weeks.

You’ll need to show you have enough money to support yourself for up to nine months for visa purposes. Currently, this is:

  • £1,334 per month for courses in London

  • £1,023 per month for courses outside of London.

You can also earn while you study in the UK. Most courses allow international students to work part time for up to 20 hours per week.

American embassies and consulates may require evidence of your finances for your entire program before issuing your visa. Find out more about US visa requirements – INTO offers free visa support and guidance for students enrolling at our US partners.

Where should I study?

Insurance

You’ll need to have full travel, medical and health insurance to cover any expenses you might encounter whilst living in Australia, the UK or US.

As an international student in Australia, you must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your student visa from an approved Australian health provider. The preferred provider for our Australian partner, The University of Western Australia (UWA), is Medibank. You should have confirmed your OSHC when you accepted your offer to study at UWA College.

You should also arrange for travel insurance in addition to your OSHC, to cover things such as cancelled flights and some medical costs.

For details of the cost of OSHC, visit the individual page for your chosen course.

You must have adequate insurance while studying with INTO in the UK. You can choose either to include Uniplan Insurance, which we'll add to your course fees, or provide proof of equivalent cover.

Any cover you have already arranged must:

  • cover the full duration of your study in the UK

  • include medical and repatriation cover up to £2 million

  • include cancellation and curtailment cover to cover the cost of your trip, including cover to repay the cost of your course fees.

Uniplan is designed for international students living and studying in the UK and will cover lost personal items, travel, health and medical claims. Find out more about Uniplan cover and costs.

Additionally, you may need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of your visa application – this gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). You can check how much you’ll need to pay by using the UKVI calculator tool

If you choose to study in the US, we’ll automatically enrol you in an insurance plan that meets visa, state and university requirements. These plans are designed to protect international students in the US, giving you peace of mind when it comes to your safety. In some cases, you are eligible to waive the insurance plan if your personal plan meets full requirements.
